Customizing your dialysis treatment

Your nephrologist at NJ Nephrology Associates will create a custom prescription for dialysis for each patient. The prescription specifies parameters for dialysis treatment. The number of treatments needed per week and the length of each treatment will vary for different patients. In general, the larger the body size of the patient, the more dialysis he or she will need.

What does dialysis do?

Dialysis handles functions that would be done by healthy kidneys. Dialysis is needed when your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body’s needs. Dialysis keeps your body in balance by:

  • Removing waste, salt and extra water to prevent them from building up in the body
  • Keeping a safe level of certain chemicals in your blood, such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate
  • Helping to control blood pressure

What is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis removes waste products such as creatinine and urea, as well as free water from the blood. As your kidneys move away from a healthy state, your body may need help with waste reomoval. Hemodialysis is one of three renal replacement therapies (the other two are renal transplant and peritoneal dialysis).

Will I need dialysis?

At NJ Nephrology Associates, our first goal is always to reverse kidney failure. When reversal is not possible, we work with our patients to preserve kidney function and overall well being. When kidney replacement therapy (“renal replacement therapy”) is required, our nephrologists will evaluate you for renal transplantation, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

Where can I get information about staying healthy with kidney disease?

The Health Library on this site is a great resource to get started. The team at NJ Nephrology Associates will be happy to work with you, and answer your questions, about what you can do to improve your health.
